GRATITUDE MONTH--#19: ORNAMENTAL GRASS

These ornamental grasses are in my yard. And each time I look at them, I am just grateful! It's not the same in a photo but perhaps as you look here, they will speak to your heart too. So beautiful!

The more I spend time with nature, the more I am stunned by the abundance of it all, the glory, the beauty, strength. It makes me feel like the world has much more to offer, like I am rich indeed.

I am so grateful for these grasses in my yard that remind me of this abundant world.

Changing seasons

Changing Seasons
warm sunny blue sky yesterday
cloudy, blustery cool wind today
a few raspberries still growing
even as the leaves on the bushes
brown and drop
the changing season is

as fickle as my heart
one day I am absolutely certain
I am ready to move on, get things done
the next day
I have crawled back in my bed
to wallow in sweet memories
and mourn the losses
one minute I'm going to take on the world

sure as any that my heart can take it all on
the next minute, I've decided to take it slow
let's think it through one more time
and then a deep sigh to pause
I look out the window and see
I will change as the seasons do
as I have always done
try or not I will go with the tide
someday looking back on this moment
with gratitude and grief
noticing how the leaves that dropped
became food for the spring
and it will be enough

FIRE

this passion
burning deep within
consumes the trash heaped upon it
returning to dust and ashes
underbrush, dead branches,

life's longing for tomorrow
fueled by yesterday's adventure
this fire of love and forgiveness
burning everything
that stands in the way
creating space for the new
transforming life into life

About Noise & Silence and Finding the Holy in it, Entry #2

On a  clear August day back in 2001, i was sitting in my kayak in the middle of one of this city's many lakes...listening. I stopped paddling and just listened. It was about eight o'clock in the morning. I just sat there and listened to what I thought would be silence. Later I reflected on that moment. Here is what I wrote:

Noise vs. Silence
The noise of the world is deafening
Me and the kayak sitting here
On the perfectly still, peaceful lake,
   While speedboats, fishing boats roar,
Lawn mowers are grinding,
   Teenagers’ music is blaring, loudly,
The bass taking over the sound of our heartbeats,
Cars just beyond the beach are racing past,
Televisions, phones, radios,
It is hard to escape the noise of the world,
My ears ringing constantly,
   So loud, I can’t think,
Can’t stop, can’t listen,
   Listen to the heartbeat,
Listen to the breathing,
   Hear the wind,
And know what the Spirit is Saying.

Silence vs. Truth
The silence of the World is heart-wrenching,
   Everyone speaks but,
No one says anything,
   Exaggerations, sarcasm, anger, teasing,
Idioms, Slang, small talk, big talk,
   Beating around the bush,
Skirting the issues,
   But secrets are kept,
Lies are told,
   And silence is golden,
A silence so pervasive that,
   Our heart is closed now,
Unable to hear the heartbeat,
   Listen to the breathing,
Feel the pulse of the world,
And know what the soul is saying.

Silence & Truth
Are we listening?
   Can we hear?
Are we speaking?
   What does the Spirit say?

What do you notice about noise and silence?
